Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that affects multiple body systems and may lead to serious complications, including impaired blood flow to the lower extremities due to neuropathy and vasculopathy. One method used to assess blood circulation in the lower limbs is the Ankle Brachial Index (ABI). A low ABI value indicates reduced blood flow to the feet, which increases the risk of diabetic ulcers and possible amputation. This study aims to evaluate the effect of diabetic foot exercises on improving ABI values in DM patients hospitalized at RSU Islam Klaten. The research uses a case study approach based on nursing care, involving two diabetic patients treated in the Zam-Zam 3 ward. The intervention involved diabetic foot exercises performed consecutively over three days. Data collected included patient characteristics, ABI values before and after the intervention, and evaluations from the nursing care process. The results showed an increase in ABI values following the foot exercise intervention. Additionally, patients reported a reduction in symptoms such as numbness and tingling in their feet. The intervention also helped improve peripheral circulation and strengthened the muscles and flexibility of the foot joints. In conclusion, diabetic foot exercises can serve as an effective nursing intervention to enhance peripheral blood circulation in patients with diabetes. It is recommended that foot exercises be incorporated as a routine complementary therapy in the management of diabetes care to prevent further complications
